Rack & Cabling Optimisation

Messy infrastructure costs more than you think

Time to reintroduce high standards within your critical IT environments

Data centres and comms rooms rarely start messy – they become messy over time. Equipment gets added, cables get rerouted, standards slip, and before long your technical documentation is out of date, no-one can tell which devices are connected to each other, and it becomes complicated to make changes.

JSC’s Rack & Cabling Optimisation service brings order back to your environment. We audit what you have, identify your risks and optimisation opportunities, and then carry out the remediation work to a defined standard – leaving you with an environment that’s safer, easier to manage, and cheaper to run.

About our Rack & Cabling Optimisation Service

Asset & Connectivity Audit

Before we touch anything, we carry out a thorough audit of your existing racks, hardware and cabling. We create an accurate baseline that enables a clear remediation plan before any work begins.

Cable Management & Remediation

Unlabelled, bundled, or incorrectly routed cables are replaced or remediated to a tidy, documented standard. Every cable is labelled at both ends, routed correctly, and recorded - making future changes faster, safer, and easier to manage.

Rack Rationalisation

Messy environments often conceal genuine inefficiency. We identify empty u-space alongside decommissioned or redundant equipment still occupying rack space, assess whether consolidation is possible, and help you right-size your footprint - reducing hosting costs and simplifying ongoing management.

Blanking Panel & Airflow Remediation

Missing blanking panels force your cooling systems to work harder than they need to. As part of our optimisation work we identify and address airflow gaps, helping to reduce cooling costs and protect equipment from thermal stress.

Standards Introduction & Documentation

Where no formal infrastructure standards exist, we work with you to define one - and implement it. Where standards have drifted from documentation, we bring the environment back into compliance and update your records to reflect the current state.

Health & Safety Compliance

Cluttered cable runs and overloaded racks aren't just operationally inconvenient — they can represent genuine health and safety risks. Our remediation work ensures your environment meets safe working standards, reducing liability and making maintenance work safer for your team and any third-party engineers.

Ongoing Maintenance Planning

We don't just fix the immediate problem - we leave you with the documentation, labelling conventions, and maintenance guidance needed to keep your environment in order going forward.

FAQs

What is rack and cabling optimisation, and why does it matter?
Rack and cabling optimisation is the process of auditing, remediating, and documenting the physical IT infrastructure within your data centre or comms room - including cable management, rack layout, labelling, and airflow. Environments that were never built to a standard, or that have drifted from their original design over time, carry real operational and financial risk: changes take longer, faults are harder to diagnose, cooling costs are higher than they need to be, and health and safety compliance becomes difficult to demonstrate. A structured rack and cabling optimisation programme addresses all of these issues and creates a clean foundation for ongoing management.
How do you handle live environments?
JSC has extensive experience carrying out rack and cabling remediation in live, operational environments. We work methodically, tracing and confirming connectivity before making any changes, and we can schedule disruptive elements out of hours where required. Our audit-first approach means nothing is touched until we have a clear, agreed plan - minimising risk throughout the process.
Can you help us consolidate racks and reduce our data centre footprint?
Yes. If decommissioned equipment is still occupying rack space, or if partially populated racks could be consolidated, we'll identify those opportunities during the audit phase and carry out the consolidation work as part of the project. Reducing your rack footprint lowers hosting costs, simplifies your environment, and makes ongoing management significantly easier.
